Our vegetable ‘flower-bed’ looked magnificent; the septic tank got blocked, or simply overflowed, feeding our vegetables well.

Aunt Olga couldn’t call the septic tank service because for so many years the tank had never been cleaned more often than once a year. Obviously, eight people produced more excrement than two. Vitek expressed concern that, if not emptied, the tank might feed back into the cellar. There was no other way; we had to do it ourselves. Aunt Olga showed us the location of the tank and we uncovered it. It ran under the main path in the back part of the garden.

Jasmine, roses and lilac were in full bloom, but their fragrance could not dull the ever-present, penetrating stench. We fastened a bucket to a gardening fork and used it as an emptying device. The bucket slipped several times and sent geysers of muck high into the air, spraying us all over.

There was little poetry in that task; shit just stinks like shit.

The only consolation was the fact that it was a family matter.
